About Us

The Freeport Club enjoys a reputation of being one of the finest public golf courses in Northern Illinois. The challenging design of our well-manicured course winds through a park-like setting of rolling fairways lined with mature trees. The natural rolling terrain, elevation changes, and well-kept greens create a unique playing experience that will test golfers of all skill levels.

100% Open To

The Public

Don’t let the ‘club‘ name fool you…we are a public golf course.
And a pretty darn nice one at that.

Condition and playability is the top priority of our Course Superintendent. In addition to maintaining the beauty of the course, the staff works to create some of the best putting surfaces in the Northern Illinois area. The combination of subtle undulation and tilt, with typical green speeds ranging from 10.0 to 12.0 stimps, gives a whole new meaning to “the short game”.

The Freeport Club’s double tiered practice range is great
for warming up prior to your round!

The Freeport Clubs Professional plans and coordinates a full-season of men’s, ladies, singles, couples, social golf and competitive tournaments, plus a junior golf program that targets youths up to 16 years of age.

Since 1893

Built in 1893, The Freeport Club is the oldest golf course in Northern Illinois.

It humbly began as a 6 hole course and later expanded to 9 holes.

In 1913 Harry Collis, a very talented golfer, greens keeper and course architect, was hired to design the beautiful 18 hole course that you see here today.  Harry designed numerous other courses, including Denver Country Club and Phoenix Country Club.

Arnold Palmer played here on August 3, 1963 in celebration of the 70th year of club operations.  It cost $3.00 in advance to see the exhibition and clinic.

After years of private use, all club operations are open to the public.  As we move forward, our goals are to return the course to its former glory and to revitalize the clubhouse for community use and enjoyment.

If you are a golfer, we invite you to come out and play a round.  It really is a unique and beautiful course.  Not a golfer?  We invite you to stop out for a cocktail and enjoy our magnificent views.
